I worked on a small eco cruise ship (30 years ago!) that went up through there in the summers. We all loved BC/Alaska. The Columbia River... not so much. No whales. :-)
As a born-and-bred British Columbian, I've only ever seen humpbacks once, and the were way off in the distance! There's a serious lack of humpbacks in my life, is what I'm saying!!

It truly was. One can visit the Sound by car too, though you'll need a boat for visiting the islands.

The humpbacks were jumping everywhere on the Sunshine Coast, but we didn't see any in the Sound.

The ones we spotted were mostly pretty far off, but a couple of times they were only a few hundred feet away. They are big!
I will tell you the best way to get a whale to disappear—take out a phone and turn on the camera!
